Lei is a software engineer at Google Deepmind, where he teaches generative models to create bespoke user interfaces. Prior to this, he explored ink interactions and cognitive accessibility at Google Research.

Prior to joining Google in 2019, Lei obtained his Ph.D. from Cornell University. In his dissertation, he leveraged AI (e.g., sound sensing and computer vision) and 3D printing to make visualizations accessible to people with visual impairments. During his Ph.D., Lei interned at Microsoft Research, Facebook Research (before Meta was a thing), and IBM Research.

While pursuing his bachelor’s degree in engineering, Lei also earned a degree in Industrial Design. He openly welcomes feedback on his immature design portfolio.
